Perspective from Japan on whaling and whale meat, a spot of gourmet news, and monthly updates of whale meat stockpile statistics

Whale meat stockpile update - August 2007

The Ministry's latest stockpile figures for August were released earlier this month.
(MS Excel, PDF formats, whale meat classification = #35)

I'm having technical issues, so this update is going to brief...

August 2007 outgoing stock: 502 tonnes

502 tonnes is 64% of the figure for August 2006.

August 2007 incoming stock: 1,044 tonnes

1,044 tonnes is also down on the figure for August 2006. The majority of this influx is the meat by-product of the JARPN II cruise, which concluded it's offshore component in the middle of August.

August 2007 end-of-month stockpile: 3,858 tonnes

The figure of 3,858 for August end is 73% of the volume held in stock at the same time in 2006.

Graph: Annual volumes

YTD incoming stock made a bit of a comeback in August, but is still a few tonnes behind YTD outgoing stock for 2007.
(2007 YTD outgoing: 5,758 tonnes)
(2007 YTD incoming: 5,723 tonnes)

YTD outgoing stock will most probably pull away over the last 4 months of the year.

Graph: Monthly stockpile movements
Stocks up in August, but it still appears that come February 2008 stocks will be at their lowest levels for at least a couple of years.

Graph: 12-month moving averages
The outgoing stock average (12-month) remains more than 100 tonnes above the incoming average, so will have to continue it's downward trend (slowly though, I imagine).

It is possible that it'll remain above the incoming average until early next year when the JARPA II cruise returns. Having a stockpile makes this possible.

Ishinomaki and Kushiro stockpiles are net gainers in recent times, while Tokyo stocks have dropped by more than half in just a couple of months.

September figures will be released on November 12. I'll bring you another update shortly thereafter.

Hi Y/H-san,

Thanks for your message. I'm fine, now happily married, but a little busy these days...
I did also have time to find the new article at ICR's page last week. I haven't read it all yet, but it is good reading for the extra information it provides.
